review 1: This was a true story set during World War II. Eric Erickson was an Ivy League, oil man, rough neck in Texas. He moved to Sweden and courted royalty and all those powerful. His business was hugely successful in Europe, bring oil to among other countries, Nazi Germany. He was viewed as a traitor and Nazi sympathizer by most, including his own brother, and hated by most. He also became loved and trusted by the Nazi's. This was all by design. He was working for the United States and Britain to track Nazi Germany's synthetic oil manufacturing plants. The Nazi's would give him tours of these plants, he would offer them advice (being a successful oil man himself) and then shortly thereafter, the plant would be bombed. Great story and very hard to put down.
review 2:
... more This excellent book documents the life of a daring man who was willing to take unbelievable risks to assist the Allies in World War II because, in his words, he was "raised to resist tyrants and dictators - and against any and all that used brutality and force to gain their goals." Not only did he believe in and judge people by their decency, his conduct during the war can be accurately summed up by this word, decency. Although very few people knew the name Eric Erickson, he was recognized after the war by the U.S. of America with the Medal of Freedom, and the citation for his medal reads in part, "Eric Erickson assisted in the creation and personally carried out one of the most elaborate and successful intelligence schemes of this war. ... The cleverness and ingenuity displayed by Mr. Erickson ... his complete disregard for his personal safety ... and his accurate and detailed reports which furnished the Allies with innumerable targets for bombing clearly demonstrate the most unselfish interest in the Allied cause." less
