review 1: Jo Bellamy goes to England to visit the Sissinghurst Castle for two reasons: to study the celebrated White Garden created by Virginia Wolf's lover Vita Sackville-West and to recover from her grandfather's suicide. She is a landscape designer working to recreate the White Garden for a wealthy man in the Hamptons. She meets Imogene Cantwell, the head gardener, and is taken on a tour. Inside one of the sheds, Jo finds a diary that seems to have been written by Virginia Wolf starting on the day after her death. If authenticated, Jo's discovery could shatter everything historians believe about Woolf's final hours. It could also be worth millions. When a woman assessing the diary steals it, Jo teams with her husband to retrieve it. The search takes them to Wolf's home, Tri... morenity University, and the public library. Jo also discovers letters from her grandfather who was from Kent. Ironically, he had been a gardener for the White Garden. The novel is rich with historical detail and suspense that explores ways the past haunts the present. Excerpts from the diary let the reader into Wolf's tortured marriage and life. Her many attempts at suicide finally succeeded. Or did they? Did someone kill the noted authoress?
review 2: This would have been a better read if I'd been confined for some sobering duration of time, say, on a train trip lasting several days. Picking it up and putting it down did not help the krazy kaper plot, and I have to admit I wasn't keen on the invented story featuring Vee Woolf and company. The ending was ridiculous. What is wrong with writing a well-plotted mystery that doesn't involve yet-another improbable romance? I can read Jane Austen for that. less
