review 1: It's impossible for me to review this without making comparisons to a very similar book I recently read: Super Crunchers by Ian Ayers.This book was written by a liberal arts major/business writer and reads like it. That isn't a negative aspect necessarily, but if Super Crunchers (written by an economist who crunches numbers in his career) barely skimmed the math behind data mining, than The Numerati never touched it. Again, that isn't a negative, per se. It actually might be a positive for people who aren't interested in the math, they just want to know what's happening. I, however, really liked that part of Super Crunchers.This book did address how should people who don't know math react to this changing world. While I walked away from Super Crunchers feeling like I neede... mored to learn stastics or I would be doomed, The Numerati assured me that there are places for more art and liberal arts people in this world of statistics.
review 2: Los Numerati es un libro que retrata bien la explosión informativa, y cómo es que ésta es aprovechada de la única manera posible: el uso de computadoras con algoritmos que se dedican a depurar toda esa información para encontrarle un cuerpo con sentido.Baker se enfoca en siete perspectivas de usuarios (empleado, consumidor, votante, bloguero, terrorista, paciente y pareja), desde las cuales analiza ventajas y desventajas de los algoritmos por medio de casos y ejemplos del uso de información a veces un tanto largos y tediosos. Tal como el mismo Baker indica, el centro de su libro radica en el capítulo que habla del Bloguero. Todo lo demás parece ser explicaciones de lo mismo con algunos detalles diferentes. Baker es periodista de una publicación de negocios, por lo que su ejercicio de redacción y entrevistas se ve claramente influenciado por motivos empresariales.Es un buen libro para la gente que se pregunta qué es lo que pasa con toda la información que fluctúa en la red, ya sea creada por humanos o por la misma computadora. less
