review 1: A "real" sci-fi Dr. Who book meaning much of it is based of real science. It is funny how little that seemed to matter to the actual story as the book feels just like any other Dr. Who book I've read. The characters are well drawn besides the main baddie who is a bit OTP but has a interesting back story. You can tell it is well-thought out. I did not care for the interludes and the little blue men kind of lost me. What happened to the disease like infection? Archive was interesting but it just wasn't made clear enough what it had stored away in its memory. That's an issue most Dr. Who books have for me, they get too lost in the abstract weirdness of the alien and it never coheres into something I can understand.
review 2: I'd been curious about the recen... moret DW stories by 'famous science fiction authors'.Baxter does a good job of capturing the voice of the Second Doctor (probably my favourite of the older doctors) and Jaime and Zoe make entertaining companions. Still, the plot is weak, lacking in excitement, magic or mystery, the villains are obvious and it's all pretty one dimensional. There's a lot of repetition as well - how many times can we go back and forth to the moon before the climax.So why 3 stars? The narration by the excellent David Troughton. Son of Patrick he channels his father with a spot on Second Doctor and a couple of highly entertaining Scottish accents. He makes it and kept me entertained even when the story was flagging. Listen for that reason, if you're a fan or like the second doctor. If not? Skip it. less
