review 1: The book covers a the story of a group of former convicts stranded on a planet orbiting Proxima by the government and forced by the government start a colony. This was a mixed bag of typical Baxter quirks. Great world building, but random, distracting info-dumps. Interesting characters, but it's mostly all head and little heart. I expect these from a Baxter novel. I enjoy reading him, I just wish sometimes he'd go off formula a bit more.
review 2: The concept of the story was excellent and generally was approached in a considered and consistent manner given an environment with two super-powers each heading towards a crisis point due to an inability to share there own unique resources. The story line focuses on one key character with a hidden back story that in
... more the end is only hinted at. And that is what I find the more disappointing part of the story - that there are several key components of the story that are left hanging. Whether that was the intent or not often author, it left me some dissatisfied. I get that the author was trying to question mankind's current dilemma's over environment and power and technology - however I'm just old fashioned in that, if you are going to introduce aspects in the story - then after finishing the book I would like to know why. Overall it is a good read though it is unlikely I will add it to my 'must read again" file. less

Really great, but has a disappointing ending with some major issues never resolved.

Stephen Baxter has a penchant for blowing things up in a big way.

Some interesting ideas, overall, characters were a bit flat.

Enjoyable, but a bit campy.
