review 1: The only thing keeping me from giving this book five stars is the ending. Although the ending was quite good, the author bringing everything to a satisfactory close, I was a bit disappointed. The fault is all mine, as I love the supernatural and while this tale, seemingly, had plenty of that, the author chose to go a different route to wind things up. So be it. But I still loved the book. The characters were amazing and you really cared about them. And if you didn't care about them, it was because they were too bad to do so. I would definitely read another book by Mr. Dobyns.
review 2: One of the reviews on the book jacket described this as a mix of Richard Russo and Stephen King, and that's just about perfect. A really fun, engaging romp through a sleepy town... more New England town that wakes up one morning to find devilry (and murder) afoot. The characters are nicely drawn, and I enjoyed the fact that the police are often a step or two slow, which allows the proceedings to draw out nicely. less
