review 1: It took me a while to get into this book (actually only about 30 pages, so not too bad) but it was so rewarding. If, like me, you're a Northern liberal who thinks Texas is some sort of lost cause and therefore not worth reading about, try this book. As with Friday Night Lights, I came to care deeply about these characters and their fates. The mystery of whodunit is equally engrossing. Beautifully written, without being pretentious by larding the story with tortured metaphors.
review 2: Somewhere between novel, biography and confession, "Growing Up Dead In Texas" is a somber memoir, the story of a young boy who saw a town fall apart around him and his attempt to make peace with what he saw so many years ago. The first-person narrator constantly seems at odd
... mores with the reality of what he was part of and what he's trying to write. It gives a certain weight to first person that's often missing -- he seems as baffled and melancholy about remembering so many details about his past. It gives the prose a certain stylistic bump, making it more than just narrative.Jones is part of that block of Texas writers who write about a hot, brutal childhood where tragedy befalls people because of the heat, the desperation. This story may be set in the 80's but it still reflects a harsh reality more suited to Steinbeck. less

So good that I had to re-read many portions of this book. The prose messes with me, and I dig that.
