review 1: If I had to take a Stephen King book series to show to a friend why Stephen King is probably one if not THE greatest living writer, it would absolutely have to be this series. I never understood why people compared Stephen King to JRR Tolkien until I read these books at the behest of a good colleague and friend. I was uncertain at first, but this book goes SO deep and is filled with twists and turns. And if you're a fool like my older brother and called that 1-800 number for a Stephen King book every month, and then read those books, you can see how this world is almost the meta world of, say, a small town in Maine. Characters and Time are malleable, but the sinister and scary and gritty and fantastic just come together amazingly with these books. And it just gets weirder ... moreand the references more obscure (maybe even for titles he hasn't written yet) but, whatever, it is there and it's an adventure that you'll have to come back to again and again to sort of figure out. And it rewards just like Tolkien or James Joyce. Very pleased with the book series. It does get somewhat, only at times, boring, but economy of words is the criterion of a shoe-maker not an artist. I think (along with The Stand) my favorite all-time Stephen King books if you take it as one book. He could have stopped at The Gunslinger but he didn't. And I am forever grateful for it and look forward to pulling this down from my rack (or whatever virtual reality we're in) when I'm 50 and catching things I didn't catch in my 20s.
review 2: New knowledge leads always to yet more awesome mysteries. The more one delves into the influences and composition of Stephen Kings Dark Tower series the more infatuated one becomes with Mr Kings unique writing formula, the one continuous story which spans 7 600+ page novel's is as enlightening as mystifying. One fecking loves how well this display of horror/ fantasy storytelling is produced Mr Kings finest work. less
