The String Diaries
review 1: This book didn't end up at all like I thought it would, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. A story of obsessive love that spans hundreds of years and engenders fear, violence, and death. An intriguing element of the supernatural makes this more than just a "love" story. My one complaint is the plot device of switching between time periods each chapter. When done well, it appears smooth and doesn't slow the storyline. When done poorly, it's too choppy to enjoy the story. This book falls somewhere in between. Early in the story, it felt choppy. As more information was revealed, it became smoother and less of a distraction.
review 2: Jones' debut novel is fast-paced and entertaining. Although I get the feeling that the mythology was made up for the book, it seeme
... mored rooted in enough elements that could be real to have the right ring of truth. Although the characters were a bit flat and seemed to fall in love too easily and be too obviously evil to be truly believable, that wasn't the type of story Jones was trying to tell anyway - it was all about the plot, and at that, it was entertaining enough to consider a success. I will say that the ending was a bit of a cop out, and demoted it immediately from what could have been close to a 5 star to a solid 4. less

Interesting premise, poorly executed. Author tried to use too many ingredients and ruined the dish.

Entertaining supernatural thriller. Well written, good characters, and a good payoff at the end.
