review 1: Stephen Mansfield has crafted an excellent biography here, though the book isn't about one single person or time. It's scope is more than one man, one family, or even one company. It's a sweeping view of history and a look at how Christianity, capitalism, and, yes, beer have impacted the world for good. The book paints a beautiful picture of multi-generational labor, and the importance of the Christian faith in motivating men to seek the betterment of those around them. I ended this book impressed by the rich history and art of brewing, the wonderful opportunity for generosity that the accumulation of wealth allows, and the exceptional faith and example of Arthur Guinness Sons & Co.Well worth a read!
review 2: I gave this book five stars, not because it did per
... morefectly what it set out to do. I gave it such a high rating because I think we need more books of its kind. Stories of men and women, common folks, who excel at secular work to the glory of God. Especially jobs that many today would claim to be forbidden for Christians--like brewing beer.It is amazing to find how much influence was had by this family of brewers on many of the luminaries of 18th through early 20th Century Christian history--like Moody, Spurgeon and Hudson Taylor. This book and others like it present a side of Christian history that many modern American Christians should learn, but which they would rather ignore. less

Fascinating story. A great read about the history of the firm and the family behind it.

Stopped about 1/3 of the way through. Too much God, not enough Guiness.
