review 1: Mansfield's Book of Man Men is an absolute 'must read' for men at any stage of life. As a youth leader, I have found my new go-to gift for the young men in our church with a note attached to make sure they pass it on to their dads once they've finished it!The 4 maxims are well covered by other reviews. Additionally, Mansfield breaks down several qualities of what it means to be the kind of men we are called to be. These chapters touch on such things as integrity, friendship, honor, adventure, etc. Each one is highlighted with an anecdote highlighting that trait from some famous (or, sometimes, not-so-famous) man of history.
review 2: I'm a big fan of his other books, but was a little disappointed with this one. I liked the historical parts and the maxims, b... moreut the rest seemed like a plug for other books. I appreciate Stephen's humility and recognizing other works, but did this need to be longer than a blog entry? Skimmed the modern conversational writing style and forced a laugh at some of the humor. A chapter on Jabez? Really? That took it down a star for me. On the other hand, the book is a good conversation piece and has many truths that men need to hear. My biggest take-away was the chapter about doing the right thing, even when you don't feel like it. Emotions will follow. So true. less
