I love fall! It’s one of my favorite seasons (the other being spring), and I love the change that is in the air when fall rolls around: the crispness, the wind, and the sense of adventure that surrounds me. I also love fall baking and the scents of cinnamon and nutmeg in the air. Pumpkin everything, fresh cookies, pies, bread, yumm!
Here are some Fabulous Fall Reads that I think of around this time of the year, starting off with my number one fall read, a book series that always makes me think of fall.
Yep, it’s the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling! There’s just something so perfectly autumn about this series. From the atmosphere of Hogwarts, to the taste of Butterbeer, to the mystery of the series. I always get the urge to re-read this series around this time of year, and sometimes just watching the movies again does the trick, but you just can’t beat reading this series when there’s a wind storm outside, and orange lights around for Halloween. And, of course, while drinking a Pumpkin Spice Latte and wearing a Hogwarts scarf! (I’m House Slytherin, which house do you belong to?)
Another book series that screams fall to me is the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. From the way Montgomery writes about scenery, to the changing of seasons in Avonlea, to reading Anne’s adventures living across from a graveyard, and for goodness sake, one of the entries is even called Anne of Windy Poplars. All the seasons get fair treatment here, but there’s something about Anne that calls to mind crisp, cool air and the changing colors of the leaves.
Another book with amazing fall atmosphere is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I’ve read this book several times, and each time I’m taken in by the setting and detail of the circus. I chose this for my book club a few years ago, and we had a great time! I made some caramel apples, we dressed up in black with red scarves, and my mom went all out with the decorations and even made some chocolate mice! This is definitely a good book to theme a party around.
Another book featuring a red, white, and black theme is Heartless by Marissa Meyer. This one is the origin story for the Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. One year I dressed up as Alice for Halloween, so anything Alice-related feels like fall to me. The characters of The Three Sisters were super creepy and atmospheric, and also, Cath, our main character loves to bake, and fall always gets me in the mood to bake!
And speaking of creepy, one of the creepiest books I’ve ever read is Mudwoman by Joyce Carol Oates. I mean, c’mon, just LOOK at that cover! Eeeeek! While this wasn’t necessarily a scary book, there was a quiet uneasiness to it that just made oh-so-very creepy and a perfect fall read.
And another book with creepy atmosphere is the beautiful masterpiece Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This is one of those books that begs to be read during the first big rain storm of the season, with the wind howling away and leaves fluttering down from the trees.
