review 1: In the first chapter of this wonderfully written book, we are introduced to a pair of sisters and their families. In each subsequent chapter, the story focuses on one family member and an extraordinary power that they come to possess. Also, in each chapter they story moves ahead thru the years. I really enjoyed that the author could write about people who discover they can turn invisible, fly, or have basic wishes come true without making the book like a comic book. Each of these family members develop powers that help them in a time of need but most of all the powers help them to understand themselves and their world better. The last two chapters alone are well worth five stars. Exhilarating, bittersweet, and heartbreaking.
review 2: I loved this book. The fi
... morerst chapter was unexceptional, but it really took off for me in the swimmer's chapter. The "twist" was engaging and surprising. Each chapter focuses on a different family member discovering a superpower. There's the standard flying power, but some of the other ones are quite surprising and I loved the way he incorporated the powers into the person's life. It's not about a way to fight bad guys or get rich, but to somehow use their powers in small ways to enhance their life. Unpredictable and charming. less

Clever. But you'd think a story about a family with super powers would be more of a comedy.

Beautiful writing. A magical realist novel that actually believes magic is real.

Weird and slow. I didn't care much for it until the final pages.

better than a 3*, I'd give it that extra half star....3 1/2!
