review 1: Disappointing. I found the style pedestrian and rather dull and the cliché of the maverick police officer got wearing after a while. The depiction of the few women characters was lamentable and the switching from present to past was confusing at times. Unrelated to the plot but seriously annoying was the proof reading which was poor and detracted from the novel. The plot was potentially very interesting but wasn't developed tightly enough and some scenes could have been removed without any adverse effect. And some parts of the plot were simply too fanciful to accept: for example, Vicky's entrance into the plot and Charlie's actions. I don't think so!
review 2: This I loved. What a thoughtful book. An intense exploration of good, bad and the nature of evil. DI
... moreDamen Brook is a marvellous character (although he is a little troubled which sometimes really annoys me). The reaper is fascinating and very complex. I think we are not finished with him yet.The relationship between Brook and the reaper is sensitively drawn. The narrative is very atmospheric. For example, I loved a line about a standing lamp vomiting light onto...it suited the gloomy nature of the scene perfectly. I can't wait to read the next instalment. less
