review 1: I picked this up after seeing it in a booktube haul and thinking it looked interesting. I thought it would be a mystery about a young girl trying to find out the truth about her mother's death - and in a way, it was, but in other ways it was just a whinefest from a very privileged young woman who is supposed to be 15 but thinks she's 30 and acts like she's 12. This book had moments that were so unbelievable that I'm surprised my eyes didn't roll out of my head and across the floor - Drew Barrymore and Orlando Bloom being your close friends? No, sorry, not buying it. Being allowed to swan off to France ON YOUR OWN? No. I didn't think any of the characters were particularly well developed at all - Luna was all over the place, she didn't know what she wanted or who she was, t... morehen by the end of the book she's scheduling meetings with Annie Liebovitz (yes, really)to talk about her photography. Or the sudden interest in photography that has NOTHING to do with the Seven Messages.Oliver, the cello-playing love interest (is the Cello the new birdcage or mustache? It seems to be popping up in hipster-y YA books a lot of late)is about as interesting as a wet week. He has a mysterious edge at first, with a controlling Dad - but do we get to find out anything about why his Dad is controlling or actually, ANYTHING about Oliver? Nope.Back to the Seven Messages - this refers to seven voicemails Luna finds on her late mother's phone. As she begins to try and piece the truth together from the voicemails, this had so much potential - but none of it mattered, really. The cufflinks? What were they about?! There were too many loose ends, too many bland people (Daria had the personality of a donut) and Luna wasn't particularly likeable. Sorry!
review 2: This was an extremely good book (which I've glad of, since I own a copy!). Firstly, it was set out well and has unusual elements that I hadn't heard of in a book before. Secondly, it is well written and has well developed characters. Lastly (definitely a sign of a great book for me), I recommended it and discussed it with my friends today so hopefully they will read it too :)So just read it :D less
