review 1: Recommended reading (Chapters 1-7) for negotiations students. nicely complements "Getting to Yes", even though it claims to be totally different approach to negotiation. Main points Diamond argues include: 1) hold people to their standards, 2) be incremental, 3) tailor you approach to the situation, 4) always be "collaborational", 5) always look for the personal connection (small talk), 6) be dispassionate (emotions kill negotiations), and most importantly 7) understand the other's perspective and get them what they really want (emotional payments)
review 2: While this book has a lot of interesting pointers on how to "get more" in your day to day life, I was often put off by the author's tone. It came off as boastful. In my head, I was thinking, only someone
... morewho is as...uh...confident as Mr. Diamond will get anywhere with some of these tactics. I'm a little more timid, and preferred Deborah Kolb and Judith William's "Everyday Negotiation", which discusses important processes in negotiation--not just the hard and fast results.I did enjoy Diamond's breakdown of public negotiations in the latter part of the book. It was some interesting food for thought if you enjoy following public process. less
