review 1: The first time I read this book I didn't like it at all. Mainly I was upset that the main character was Oskan and not Charlemagne, who was my favorite character in the series. I felt that though we hadn't explored Oskan's character in depth, we didn't need to know more. However, rereading it now I take it all back. This book does such a good job at showing us the struggle of good and evil. Not as a clash of two great armies, though there is that too (and it's awesome), but within the body of the man that we have seen as a constant through the whole series. Outwardly we have seen him as gentle and honest. Though he tells us that he struggles to stay good and not give into the dark, we don't see that until this book.
review 2: Just finished reading, and all I can
... more say is Wow. Stuart Hill is a truly brilliant author. He's created a group of characters that's completely unforgettable. I first thought that this series detailed Thirrin's life, but upon reading the last book in the Icemark saga, I realized that It's about Oskan, her husband. He's the hero. His bravery is unmatched, he's one of those characters that will stay in your mind for life. Cheers to Stuart Hill for creating him. less

These books are great fun. Definitely adolescent literature though.

Very good read. Sad ending, with the death of some main characters.
