Morning Report
review 1: This is the continuing story of Luke and Simon, the owners of Lone Cow Ranch. In this installment of the story, we pick up with two new main characters being Tommy, a young ranch hand, and Noah, a 36 year gay black minister from a neighboring town. (This is a man who is used to dealing with bigots.). Both of these guys were minor players in the first story. There are immediate sparks between these two new main characters, but there is a 13 year age difference. Noah decides that, if he is going to have a relationship with young Tommy, Tommy has to come out to his parents and risk their alienation. Then there is angst, angst, angst, and finally Tommy comes out to his parents who immediately reject him. (His parents were the two homophobes from the first book in this series t... morehat made everyone's lives miserable.). Well, homophobia hits home again I'm this book, and Noah and Tommy are placed on high alert to prevent anything untoward from occurring. But, it seems like the author has a thing for this invisible character, Pastor Tony, who wants to take over anything gay and run the gays out of town. But again, after another 200+ pages, we still haven't really met the guy (and that is really annoying me at this point). At the end of the book, we learn that Noah has been voted out as the pastor of his diocese church, and will be founding a new independent church that will have its home base as Lone Cow Ranch. I only gave the first book in the series two stars, but this installment of the story is a little better. So, three stars from me. Hopefully the remaining two books in this series will continue to improve. Just as a note for writing enthusiasts -- There are certain structural problems with this book . . . For example, it appears that some paragraphs were edited out of the book without fixing the preceding or ensuing paragraphs to tie them together. And, there is a problem with "voice" in this book. (When the author writes, "and he answered", we frequently don't know who "he" is since there were five or six men involved in the conversation.)
review 2: Story 4.75 StarsNarration 4.75 StarsThis is one of my all time favourite cowboy series and I have read all the books at least a couple of times. When they started coming out on Audio with a great narrator it was an added bonus! You may remember towards the end of Morning Report (Book 1) when people were gathered in Luke’s fathers hospital room that there was a look that passed between Noah and Tommy. Well that look and what it meant just wouldn’t go away!Noah is a pastor of a local church and his preaching encompasses ALL walks of life without bigotry. Noah is a black pastor, a gay pastor and a man who lives by god’s word in a compassionate way unlike his nemesis Pastor Jackson who is still preaching fire and brimstone to anyone that will listen. He is a man that is all too aware that the church doesn’t really know what to do with him, that he was ‘dumped’ into a church with no congregation and a leaky roof, but he has built up his following and his congregation has swelled in recent months with the cowboys from the Lost Cow Ranch and their families and friends.Tommy works at the Lost Cow. He has spent his life hiding who he really is and is still afraid to tell his bigoted parents he is gay. Having seen the recent town reaction to Luke and Noah he is terrified and even more determined to hide his secret. Then he meets Noah and for the first time considers the possibility of a relationship with another man. Progress is slow between the two men initially; Tommy is like a skittish horse but at the same time craves Noah’s touch and words. This series is about family and that doesn’t always mean blood. The cowboys on the ranch learn about true friendship when faced with bigotry and hatred. Noah is left humbled by the support he receives when he has to fight for his church and is stunned to learn so many people will offer him support and options for his uncertain future. No matter who or what your adversary your real friends and families will always have your back and help fight your corner. He just has to have....Complete Faith!NarrationAaron Pickering is an absolute treat to listen and was perfect for this book. I hope he narrates the rest of the series and he does it quickly! less
