review 1: I've always liked the Kinsey Milhone series, mostly because I like the Kinsey character - straight-up, no nonsense, smart, and not the typical portrayal of a female PI at all. However, I recommend reading the series, NOT listening to them on CD like I did with this one (the actor narrating was SO ANNOYINGLY OFF and made Kinsey sound all tough and sarcastic when I "hear" her as just very blunt and that's what I like about her). Good story about an unsolved kidnapping/murder with two time frames, current day and the 60s when the disappearance took place, lots of interesting plot threads, believable characters, and some historical detail from the 60s which is fun. Not her best one - the ending kind of flames out - but ... again this was pneumonia-recovery listening and so ... moreit was enjoyable. If you are unfamiliar with the series, start at A! They get really good around the middle of the alphabet.
review 2: Very readable Kinsey book pulled me in right away to the interlocking stories of a long-ago kidnapping. Sue Grafton has grown her talent, though her detective has stayed quite remarkably consistent. The seventies come alive--no cell phones, or internet. Mysteries are solved the old-fashioned way, by footwork, library research, writing things down on index cards. And the memory of the halcyon 60s still fresh and disorienting for all the characters, a wild ride they survived but still barely understand.... less
