review 1: I thought this was a cute story about little girl who wanted the perfect dress, but didn't find it until she looked at what she already had and used her imagination. However, I know that there is some hype about the part where she days she can't get one dress because is so sleek she won't be able to eat cake in it (or something to that effect). People get all up in arms about it and complain that a five-year-old should not be worrying about her figure or whether or not the dress will fit right after eating cake. Honestly, I think that part is so tiny that it probably escapes children's attention and it's just the adults making a big deal out of. I was not really offended by it and wouldn't feel one bit bad about reading it to my kids. And if by some weird chance they did... more notice that part and ask about it, it would be a great way to talk to them about people's body's an how each of us should be grateful for the body that we have because it is special in someway and then talk about what makes them special no matter how they look.
review 2: I'm giving it three stars because the collage work illustrations are quite delightful. Our main character Birdie is having a birthday party and needs a new dress, but none of the dresses she tries on are quite right. Finally she goes up to the attic and finds old clothing that she combines into a party outfit just right for her. I like the message at the end, if only the message in the middle weren't quite so . . . uncomfortable.Birdie tries on dresses that aren't "big girl" dresses, they're more like cocktail dresses. I find the idea of her trying on a sheath dress disturbing, and more disturbing that it's too "snug to eat cake in". Birdie appears to be turning five why not have more five year old appropriate dresses, even if they're a little outrageous to prove the point of the story. It's a little superficial in dealing with clothes . . . but that at least I don't mind since the story makes no bones about it being anything else. And the idea of recycling her grandparents old clothes is not only practical, but gives her a style all her own. less
