review 1: The first 150 pages of this book are slow reading and may turn some off. It begins with a first person account of white European settlers coming to America from the point of view of a young boy. However, a bit less than 1/2 of the way into the story something happens that I wasn't expecting and completely changed the book, and this is where I fell in love with this story. I even cried at the end. Cooper is an outstanding writer for upper elementary grades and this book is well researched. I recommend it as either a class read or a novel as part of a unit on Pilgrims/Plymouth/New World. It tells the story from both sides, natives and Europeans; evil and kindness, prejudice and racism exist in both worlds.
review 2: Cooper writes a fascinating story set in
... moreearly New England as Europeans were first settling in America. She does a great job of portraying the friendship and tensions between settlers and native nations, as well as tensions between strict Puritans and other settlers who had different Christian beliefs. Actual leaders of the time, such as Roger Williams, Miles Standish and Massasoit are mentioned as part of the story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in early American colonization and relationships with the native Americans. less
