review 1: A lovely character study of a very strong young woman. Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bones came to mind -- without the hand, of course. Gilmore does a particularly good job capturing the community of factory seamstresses. I was reminded many times of my friends on Sand Mountain and the deep friendships they forged. You can't help but root for Emmalee, Kelly Faye, and all the women who surround them.
review 2: The Funeral Dress follows a young girl raised by her father with a newborn child of her own. Her father's reputation has a significant effect on her life and how she is viewed by others in this small town near Chattanooga, Tennessee. She gets a job at a local clothing facility and the women there start to take her under their wings. One of women die
... mores in an unfortunate accident and she pleads with the funeral director that she will be able to make the dress for this woman to wear at the viewing. The Funeral Dress is a book about judgement. It's about how the town views the girl, the woman, and the girl's abilities not just to make this dress but to raise her own child. The book sheds light on the prejudices that people have based on where you live or your family name. less
