review 1: I loved this book! The main character, Bezelia, was my favorite. I enjoyed how well the author wrote, and it gave a feeling of being there and watching all of the events unfold. However, I do wish that some of the other supporting characters were more developed. I wanted the book to delve deeper into their lives.(SPOILER ALERT...stop reading now, unless you want to know what happens!) For example, I wanted to know more about Maizelle. I wanted Bezelia to bring her up out of the basement, particularly at several climactic moments toward the end when Bezelia rose up in anger and found her voice to be who she wanted and needed to be. But I also realize that perhaps the author was making a point: that maybe she didn't do so because even though she was rebellious for her time, ... moreBezelia was still a person of her society....the life and times during that era had its impact upon her. Also, I was sadly disheartened that she and Samuel did not end up together. However, perhaps they did have a life together, but just did not get married. There were several things toward the end that led me to think that they allowed their love to grow, and secretly continued their relationship.
review 2: Like The Help, this book is a glimpse into what life was like before and during the Civil Rights Movement. It is mostly told from a child's point of view. I think, when my daughter gets old enough to handle the sex passages, I will suggest she read this book. OH BTW: This book has one evil mom in it. You do learn why, but it really doesn't make you hate her any less. You will like this book if you love some good ole Southern Gothic drama. less
