review 1: For me, this book was not quite "I-couldn't-put-it-down" quality but it was still a good read. I think the main reason it took me a while to get through it was because 1/4 of the way through it, I already knew what was going on and had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen and I was correct. There are a few surprises that are not so easily predicted, however for me it was a dead give away. While reading this you have to have an open mind and have fun with it since there is a bit of superstition and "magic" in the story. It is not incredibly realistic but it's more of a relaxed, fun read.
review 2: Given that I do not care for books about family drama and angst and broken relationships, this was a serviceable book. It gets a 2 (since I can't do a 2.5) ... morealthough I just gave another book (about exploding mangoes) a 2 and there were more things I didn't like about that one. My final sentence sums up the 2.Several of the characters were not as fully developed as they could have been, sacrificed to the exigencies of the plot, I suppose. But since I don't care for a lot for family dramas, that was fine by me.The book could have been written without the plot device of the little black dress, entirely. I am not sure why is was even included, except to give the book a title. The characters could easily have gone the paths they chose without the dress, and to a large degree it contributed to the weak characterization since that became the motivation rather than internal drivers. The dress either needed to be a larger plot device or not there at all...I felt about this the way I feel about Reader's Digest Condensed books, it passed the time but don't confuse it for a real book. less
