review 1: Beatrice, an Irish girl who makes lace and sews, is hired by the Metzenburgs in Berlin, 1938. At 17 and coming from a poor family, Beatrice is intrigued by their life of wealth, art and collecting. As Hitler gains power, that life changes and Beatrice finds herself on the family's country estate, burying those collections for protection. The description of life under the Nazi regime is detailed and the ways that people stayed alive brings Beatrice to a full understanding of those with whom she'd been living.
review 2: After reading 10 reviews I realize I must have very different tastes in books. No need for me to repeat what the story is about, it's the impact it had on me,long to be remembered. Surely the monotone voice is on purpose, for how else can one s
... morepeak after living the unreality of the events. Malnourished, diseased, uncomprehending of this inhumanity & slowing starving to death - this unworldly girl must be in a daze with otherworldly events. She's putting one foot in front of the other just as the marched inmates have done. I've read countless F/NF war stories in 50 years & felt like this was a new view & voice. To me, Beatrice offered 'christian values' with no regard to herself. Based on my cousins experience as a captured flyer & Austrian POW, he was more afraid of the drunk liberating Russians on horseback, swords flashing, than from his jailers. I'd be comforted to think that someone like Beatrice cared for my MIA at his death. How many of us really know how we'd react in similar circumstances? Is it possible we'd reach the point of dazed to the inhumanity? Haven't we already reached that point? I really liked the book. less
