review 1: Another book with place and time that is interesting and it also tells the story of a young woman pulled from the home she had known forever to move to another country, one of questionable safety, Germany. The story of a young Irish lacemaker invited to join a wealthy household in Germany. It is in this household she chooses to stay when Germany begins WWII. Neither servant, guest, nor family she fills a uniquely pivotal part of the household . It is an interesting perspective on life for ordinary, good people who endure the War they neither supported nor fought in but for whom priorities and the importance of objects long protected must be reevaluated almost on a daily bases. ... moresh girl is lured to Europe with promise of a job making lace in the home of a wealthy family. The outbreak of the war means that her hosts must hide or store wonderful art objects they and their ancestors have collected. They move to the country house, are urged to flee the country, and endure and suffer the consequences of their choices and their ethnic identity. The character of the young Irish girl is very well-developed and she experiences growth and acquires insight into the complexities of life. less

Interesting story but very depressing. The title was fitting. I just was hoping for more from it.

This story wasn't so much about the life of objects but the survival of WWII.
