Delirium: Book Review Rant

Book Series: Delirium Series ( book #1)

Author: Lauren Oliver

Genre: Dystopian

Hey guys! Today I want to talk about the book Delirium. I actually haven’t finished reading this. I only have maybe 50 more pages to go. But I just had to get this rant out! By the way, this does have some spoilers.

Ok, so the book starts off with the main character, Lena. She’s the typical and cliched heroine. She describes herself as plain and quiet, yet she has a best friend who is rebellious, pretty, rich, speaks her mind, and is basically everything that Lena wishes she were. That’s the main thing I dislike about this book. IT. IS. SO. CLICHE!!! I feel like these dystopians are all cheap knockoffs of The Giver. You know, there’s no such thing as love. The main character thinks their little community is just so great and then they find out all these secrets that make them horrified, blah, blah blah.

The plot is just so predictable. One example of this is the whole romance story between Lena and Alex. As soon as the guy was introduced, I knew that the two would end up together. There was no subtlety about it at all. She was just all the sudden in love with him. That just goes to show how extremely predictable this is! I mean, one second they’re running for their lives and then they’re hiding in a shack and making out like they’ve been in love forever even though it was only their third meeting! What’s with that? And another thing that I hate: Lena is always referring to how plain she is yet Alex thinks that she is so beautiful. Why, why, why would Alex go for Lena when he could have her gorgeous friend, Hana, instead? It makes no sense to me. And then, another super lame revelation, even though Lena has been thinking her whole life that her mother committed suicide, she turns out to be alive?! If Lauren Oliver thought that would be a shocker or a huge twist, she was dead wrong. I saw that coming from a mile away!

The plot has also been rather slow. Nothing big has really happened. It’s just basically Lena being like, Oh I’m so worried about being in love but I’m going to do it anyway because I don’t care about consequences and I love Alex so much. I’m so worried about everything, my life is awful but I want to go kiss Alex some more.  That is literally what goes on in almost the whole book! A lot of the time I just feel like slapping Lena and telling her to get a grip. She is just one of those characters who really annoys me. So far, I honestly don’t even know what the climax of the story is. The plot is just moving so slowly. If you asked me to say what the book is about, all I could really say is that it’s about a world where there’s no such thing as love. . . just like all the other dystopian novels!

This book was certainly not what I thought it would be. I was really disappointed because I have read a few other of Lauren Oliver’s books and I liked them and I had high expectations for this book as well. But clearly, those expectations were too high. I am giving this book 2 out of 5 stars because it has no originality to it. I give it any stars at all because I do think that the writing style is generally easy to follow and I never found myself being confused as I read the book.

I will most likely be finishing this series because I do want to know what happens.

Don’t forget to follow! Thx. xoxo
