review 1: This book is a new favorite of mine. The book was well written, and had something in it for everyone. This book had historical references, a strong heroine and romance. The only thing I would say about this book is there are several instances of bloody war scenes hence the subject of the book. If that is not your thing, than I would not recommend this. However it is a great book and I cannot wait to read Susanne Dunlap's other books!
review 2: When I was in high school, late 60's, I inhaled historical fiction of John Michener and Leon Uris--Exodus, Trinity, Mila 18, etc. In comparison, YA historical fiction today is so light on history and long on fiction. Lame is the word, I believe.Author Susanne Dunlap tells the story of Florence Nightingale through the vo
... moreice of a young stowaway nurse who sneaks on a ship bound for Turkey to prove herself in a battlefield hospital for British soldiers. Unfortunately, big love interests of the teenage nurses get in the way of the Florence Nightingale story. Who is Miss Nightingale? So desperate are we to entice teens to read books that we praise authors who skip history and context in YA books. It's unacceptable that the 17-year-old runaway doesn't describe the details of the faraway country where she has just landed. What is the context for the war in which so many British soldiers are dying? Where is it? How about a map? On and on, poor little readers of 2013 barely get a clue.I give this book by Susanne Dunlap three stars for effort. It's a good outline for a real historical fiction book. It needs some meat. less

I closed the book. It was just too boring. Not enough meat to the bones, just a lot of bones.
