review 1: I didn't expect to like this half as much as I did. Maybe because of the oh-so-chick-lit cover. But I've learnt my lesson. I loved this book and I loved Laura, yes she's flawed but so is everyone else. The way the book describes this childhood bullying is so intensely spot on. Let's face it, we all knew our own Heddy, even if we weren't the Laura of that situation, we were the bystanders. We watched it happen. If not for having three children I could have read this in one afternoon. As it is, it took me two. I woke up this morning with a worried feeling that I couldn't quite place before realising that I was still living in the book, and I was worried for Laura. When I read books with this sort of theme I find myself detesting the vapid main characters as they make stupid ... moredecision after stupid decision. Laura is a breath of fresh air.
review 2: It's a very readable book - it's like a story you have heard from your friend or your neighbour . It's a story about bullying , self-hurting and the guilt. But mostly the book is about the competitive world we live in, the society we try to fit in even for a price of losing our self. It's so true that we have to pose and wear happy social faces even when we want to say ' I am not happy in my marriage',' I can't cope being working mum - it's so bloody hard' . Instead we have to pretend that we are so content to be good mothers and perfect housewives and we so lucky to have a job . What if you want something different from your life, what if you want to change it one day? That's what is the book about and I truly recommend it less
