review 1: This book is bizarrely (barely) plotted and does a lot more telling than showing; characters and situations are described, not illustrated with dialogue or actions. the author is apparently studying for a PhD on the subject of this generation of French Canadian women, and it shows; lots of historical detail which makes for a fascinating and illuminating reading experience, but not a real sense of a story and characters really brought to life. And as I said, the plotting is weird--at least half the book takes place in France, there are incidents that seem only to illustrate some story from the author's own research, and the central relationship between Laure and Deskaheh is barely sketched at all, though it's important to the plot.
review 2: I thought this was
... more an interesting and compelling story. There wasn't any flourish to the writing--the writer told the story as it was. It was direct and descriptive. I liked the story and l liked the description of the characters (though somewhat underdeveloped and not especially likeable themselves) and the journey we were brought on with the characters. I liked the love story too... This was a good read and it was easy to get into and stay interested in. less

Interesting historical view of France but I found the narration was a little bland.
