review 1: This is a terrible book. I stuck with most of the way theough, because I was interested in the history it was describing, but couldn't even bring myself to finish. None of it felt believable, and I found lots of little things that seemed like like historical inaccuracies (but this started as a history thesis, so.....? Either I am way off base, or there should have been more explanation). The cardboard cur-out characters didn't help either. Yikes.

Laure and Madeleine know little of the place called New France, except for stories of ferocious winters and men who eat the hearts of French priests. To be banished to Canada is a punishment worse than death.I found the realism of the time interesting, but as a whole the book was depressing and the character of Laure felt incomplete and unstable in her wide swings from rebellion to complacency.. less

Interest despite the lack of likeability in the main character. Thought the ending was a bit abrupt.
