review 1: Bram is quite depraved but throughout Always a Scoundrel he begins to recognize a restlessness in himself that begins when the sister of a pesty friend is "sold" into an engagement. Rosemund - gingerhaired, curvy and straight in thr wrong places, intelligent and just a good loyal person is not appreciated by her family. When her naive brother loses !0000 to an evil friend, the family is surprises that Lord Cosgrove wants Rosemund. They agree to her marriage and she is willing until she meets Bram who has overheard the plans. He knows Cosgrove is not suitable for a sweet virgin and thus begins Bram's curious investigation that eventually entangles him and Rosemund. Throughout the book Bram denies heis worth but begins to acknowledge that the stupid and wicked things he... more has done were to upset his father. Family relationships and dynamics are a big part of this book as Bram and Rose struggle with their roles and duties. Rose started out unique but by the end didn't seem so special but a changed Bram is charming. Rose brings color and hope and light to Bram while he saves her brother and her. Different ending from Enoch and a good finale to this series.
review 2: One of those romances I can't decide how to rate because I'm not sure how I feel about certain aspects of the plot. The heroine is the virginal daughter of an aristocrat who has been promised in marriage to an a wealthy sadist, Cosgrove, who holds the gambling note of her brother. Everyone knows the marriage could destroy her but the family doesn't seem to care because they want to discharge the debt. The hero, Lord Bram, is a bit of a hellion himself and in fact had been "trained" by Cosgrove. He's never given his heart to a woman but he's deeply troubled by the situation. I"m really surprised at how much I enjoyed the book, esp. given the way Cosgrove attempts to use sex as a weapon. I probably liked it p because of the development of both characther. Heroine recognizes that her sense of duty can’t overcome need for self-preservation and takes charge of her life. Lord Bram really grows up as well as the book progresses. I"d give it a 3.5 on my romance scale but will round up to a 4. less
