Pam of Babylon
review 1: I'm glad this is the last of the five-book Babylon series (though I'm sure there could be another).Suzanne Jenkins has created a tales of dysfunction borne out of sexual liaisons of Jack Smith, his family, and his male and female lovers, most who have contracted HIV or AIDS from him.FAMILY DYNAMICS is written from an omnipresent POV and uses a lot of telling of backstory written in passive tense. One of the biggest issues I had with the writing is that I felt it was too "in your face" with judgments that I could make for myself. Without giving away the ending, it seemed to be a negative or "bad" or shameful. I felt perhaps some of Jenkins' values were being foist upon me as a reader.I liked how she weaves together so many characters, but sometimes it's fo... morerced.
review 2: ****SPOILER ALERT*************************************Talk about a finale! I never saw the ending coming! We return to Babylon and Pam but first we get a look into Jack's Childhood lover Ashton's life. Ashton has married Ted. After coming home from a vacation they discover Ted has fathered a child and his daughter Deborah is looking to meet her parents.Next there is Steve, Pam's sister Marie's husband, Marie has passed away from aids. He is feeling the squeeze of fatherhood with the child Marie has left behind for him to raise with her Mother Nelda.Pam has a new man in her life thank to one of Jack's lovers family wanting to sue her, Enter her new lawyer Dan. Pam has finally taken charge of her life, a blessing. Jack's Mom makes an appearance and of course leads everyone on a crazy chase dealing with her antics once again.Sandra and Tom are now living together and happy...Then we head into Pam and Jack's children's lives. Brent, their son is given an ultimatum by his girlfriend. Lisa their daughter has found the man she's going to married or perhaps she has found his brother the ex-priest more to her liking??? What happens when Steve Marks runs off leaving his child with Tom and Sandra because Pam's mom takes a bad fall and is taken to the ER--your first shocker but it wont be the last one.As the story continues to unfold, you find everyone has finally found themselves content even happy, but look out because a storm is brewing. I have never been to Cosco's (not so sure I want to go lol) After a confrontation between Ashton, Pam and Sandra it all comes to a head. Strangers who thought they were family are now backed in a corner rethinking things. As the drama comes to an end, all seems to be back to normal when out of no where the author has tossed in a hell of a shocker ending to this final book. All I can say is Nooooooo this can't be it, there has to be more. Who? What? Where? Why? Seriously, I now have that one burning question...how the hell did that happen but then my criminal justice/forensic psychology laden mind snaps and it all falls into place. If you have not read this series, you are so missing out! Each book is better than the last and you will never forget Pam of Babylon, she will make you crazy wanting to shout at her, encourage her, hug her and cheer for her, pray for her and in the end just love her because you want her to be the hero in her own story. And Jack, you got the very last laugh didn't you? @$%#%$#$#&%*&^*&^!!! less
