review 1: For me this book had the right mixture of Italian family heritage, love and magic. The Amore family in the Bronx have the gift of sight (like ESP) and are into herbal remedies. When Yale student Eleanor finds out she is pregnant she heads to the grandmother and family she remembers the summer she turned 13. Unfortunately, she doesn’t remember everything and as the story unravels Elly's memories and the mystery surrounding the day more than ½ the family dies comes together. The family dynamics are multifaceted. It’s really, a complex strange story if you contemplate it, but Palmieri wrote the tale so that each section gives you a little bit more about the dreaded day in 1945. References to mental illness, addiction, domestic violence and witches which may bother ... moresome readers.
review 2: I was at a function one time and the speaker was a librarian. She spoke about not letting books "bully" you. In short, if you don't like it, put it down - there are too many good books to read. This was her rule of thumb: If you are under 50 - then read 50 pages of the book. If it doesn't grab you - put it down. If you are over 50, subtract your age from 100 and read that many pages. If it doesn't grab you - put it down. If you live to be 100 you get to judge a book by it's cover! Well I should have read 39 pages but instead I read 110 and then I put it down. In fact I am giving it to my 13 year old granddaughter to read - it's something that I think she will enjoy. I found this to be a pathetically stupid book. This book is a "Practical Magic" wanna be. I sing praises to Alice Hoffman - she is one of my favorites. But Ms. Palmieri just doesn't come close. Now a lot of people have given good ratings to this book - it just was not my cup of tea. less
