review 1: "Rocket loved books. He loved to read them to himself or to sit quietly by his teacher, the little yellow bird, as she read them aloud. Rocket even liked the way books smelled. When he opened a new book, it smelled like a place he'd never been to, like a friend he'd never met." Brilliant!!!! This beginning is the best to read to a child, to teach them the love of reading! The story premise of collecting words and creating a word tree and then writing a story is an awesome summer idea if not a great way to begin a school year with the elementary children. A word tree! I can see it on the wall already by using my imagination. Rocket has other titles and they are about reading too.
review 2: In this sequel to How Rocket Learned to Read, the endearing pup puts his
... more reading skills and vocabulary words to work as he attempts to write his first story. He and his teacher, the yellow bird, create a word tree with all the new words Rocket has learned. But as he attempts to write a story, Rocket soon realizes that knowing lots of words does not make a story. He struggles with getting started, but with the bird’s encouragement, Rocket looks for inspiration around him. He sniffs out a pine tree with a nest in it. He is sure something is in the tree. The next morning he gets his answer in the form of a new word: o-w-l, spelled out on the ground in feathers. Rocket meets the owl and finally decides that his story will be about the owl. But Rocket still struggles as he writes; the bird spurs him on by asking leading questions, coaxing him to add details and providing reassurance. After much effort, the story is finally finished. Rocket reads it to the owl, who loves it, and the once-shy owl and Rocket become friends. The temperate tone of the oil and colored pencil illustrations complements the charming story perfectly. Young readers and would-be writers will relish this story. They will understand that they are not alone as they struggle to be inspired, choose a topic, and invent characters when taking on the daunting task of writing a story. They will identify with Rocket’s frustrations and accomplishments. The word tree is a no-brainer for teachers looking to build upon this story. The book can serve as a springboard for their class writing projects. It’s a story that even older readers can relate to as they tackle all the varied writing assignments they must master to pass their state-mandated tests. It’s a worthwhile addition to any library. less
