review 1: This is the Third book in a series of four thick epic fantasy series. Like many middle books it has a tendency to drag a bit. I found that Barriks adventures in Fairy land somewhat tedious and hero's quest. William's novel structure is not as clear. However, despite the rather flabby prose it is still a gripping book. His adventures with Briony and Qinnitan are especially riveting. I am thoroughly engrossed by the story surrounding the Autarch. The Egyptian god king from the desert adds more risk than even the otherworldliness of the fairies. If you are a fan of big meaty epics then please read this book. It is not a book for the fainthearted or someone that has problems keeping track of multiple plotlines and a cast of thousands. But if you find book like that chal... morelenging and fun then you will love this series.
review 2: This was a very exciting 2nd to last book in the series. One of the great things about Tad Williams' series is that he puts synopsis' of the previous books (*cough*wish Robert Jordan and George R. R. Martin did this*cough*). Prince Barrick is behind the Shadowline making his way to the where the King and Queen of the Qar are so that his quest for the Storm Lantern and his mistress will be completed.Briony has announced herself to the court in Syan and hopes to gain their favour and them to help her win back her kingdom. However things go awry when two of her maids are poisoned...Vansen mysteriously ended up under the Southmarch castle and he and Chert help to defend the Funderlings against the invading Qar. Quinnitan has been captured by Vo who is taking her to the autarch (who has King Olin and is going up to Southmarch castle also). This book was very exciting, with lots of unexpected things happening. I look forward to the final installment and see what the outcome will be. less

Good read, however, too many sub-plots and complications.
