review 1: Ghana Must Go (2013) follows a Ghanaian/Nigerian family back and forth across the Atlantic as first the parents, then the children, must come to terms with transnational living: the losses it entails, the difficulties, eventually (possibly), the healing. The novel is told largely through back story as it begins with the father's death (in Ghana--where he has gone after leaving his family--for reasons I won't reveal). We then learn the family story: how the mother escaped Nigeria during the purging of Igbos that came prior to Nigeria's Civil War; how the father left Ghana; how they met and married in the U.S. Then we learn the story of each child: dutiful older brother, the twins, the baby. Eventually the family will gather in Ghana for the funeral. What sets this nove... morel apart is a distinctive style, a complex family story about well-to-do West Africans living in New England, and its deep engagement with transnationalism. For anyone who has lived in two countries and been torn by questions of identity and belonging, Ghana Must Go is essential reading.
review 2: A wonderfully rich exploration of the lives of an African-American family, separated by their own feelings and often harsh judgements of themselves. They reunite at the death of the father, Kweku, a skilled surgeon who had abandoned the family in a time of persona crisis. Taiye Selasi masterfully takes us into the heart of each of the protagonists, setting their lives against the context of events in Africa and in America that shape their destinies. She has created a wonderful set of characters who will live on in my heart, with all their flaws, confusions and talents. I listened to it in a beautifully narrated audio version, with a rich array of African voices created by the narrator. less
