review 1: Simply beautiful. One word to describe this story? Honest. The characters come to life on the page, the emotions are utterly believable and for once it wasn't about a comfortably wealthy Count/Lord saving a penniless actor/whore/ex-soldier. A quiet and beautiful tale of desperation and poverty and real life in the Depression.I loved it and would like to read more about these two.
review 2: First of all I have to say that I kinda like this book. It tells a story placed in the midst of the economy crisis, about a journalist named Whit, who was broke to the extent go spending nights in a flophouse. He then met with Peter and somehow got attracted to him as they quickly became intimated over conversations. Afterwards, Peter invited Whit over to his house, which t
... moreurned out to be such a luxurious one. Of course Whit was struck but he soon found out Peter was a very lonely and miserable soul despite the fact that he seemed to be well-provided with money; he wanted to console the man. Peter then also felt in love with Whit, they conveyed their feelings with each other on one night and later on Whit was put to an awe as he'd known Peter was a "Dorington", an used-to-be-rich guy due to his father's bussiness corruption. There were misunderstandings and distrusts (one-sided though) but they were all solved smoothly at the end. This book wasn't a long read and it didn't have many characters. I liked the plot, I loved the characters, I enjoyed the twists. What made me disappointed was the book written so swiftly. I mean, Tamara Allen could have expanded it some more, digging into the characters' background, their memories, their own stories, etc... and everything would have been perfect. Even though her way of writing soothed me but it wasn't enough and there were a few parts in the book I found dissatisfied. In the book there were deep characters readers could sympathize with, but it was just with their emotions only, I wished the author'd had given us more. I don't know, it felt like I'd just finished a good fanfiction.Well anyway, reading this book helped me killed times. I'll read it again as it has appealed to me greatly. Recommend to anyone who likes a gentle love story between two men. less
