review 1: A mystery-historical-romance story written with lovely prose and what has to be well researched period details. There are surprises, twists, and turns in the mystery element of the story; the romance has its own challenges. One being, of course, the era in which the story takes place. Both main characters, in particular, the bank employee, are charming. Their beginning relationship is sadly strained in the workplace. It is humorous, but also hurtful to one character (I felt for him). This is a soft read; it is pleasant and comforting. There are some violent-ish action scenes, yet the story remains endearing more than adrenaline inducing. The romance is tamely presented. My first read from this author, I have her others waiting for sample reading.
review 2: This
... more was a beautifully realized and romantic story. The backdrop of turn of the century New York, the details of everyday life, the way Jonah and Reid danced around each other and then finally got together. It was all wonderfully done and a very satisfying read. I loved it! I loved the contrast between Jonah and Reid. Jonah always so conscious of everything, so cautious and anxious, but inside he's quite passionate and full of feeling. And then there's Reid who is so outgoing and charming, who can so easily make people like him, but when alone with Jonah he can be vulnerable. They are two very well-drawn characters with a real depth to them. I really enjoyed their romance. less
