review 1: I was born in 1940, and I seem to need to read about the different aspects of World War II on people. This book gave me a different glimpse of a community, that was formed, and surrounded with secrets. They were surrounded with barbed wire. They couldn't let their friends and family know where they were living. Their cameras were taken away from them when they went into the town. The wives didn't know what their husbands were working on, and they had their names changed. There was pride that the atom bomb had stopped the war, but there was also guilt at the killing of so many people. My dad's cousin worked in Alamogordo New Mexico, in a secret government job, starting in the 1950's. We visited them, and went through one of their sand storms. The sand gets in your ... morehair, eyes, clothing, and in your cars and houses. It's not a pleasant experience. The people in Los Alamos didn't have comfortable places to live. I have never read a book, that told a collective story, the way this one has been told. Instead of individual stories, it is told as a collective experience. It was an interesting look at this very challenging time in our history.
review 2: The book is narrated in the first person plural which is sa bit hard to get used to. The style also ends up with the being no well developed characters for the reader to embrace.I found the subject matter interesting the lives of the wives and families in the community created for the scientists creating the atom bomb.Once I got used to the writing style I found this an enjoyable fast read. less

All in all, not a bad read once you get used to the perspective. I enjoyed the historical details.

I found the story very interesting but did not like the writing style. Still worth a read.

There is a reason people don't write books in first person plural. Reading it sucks.

Like other reviews have noted, I had a hard time with the author's writing style.
