review 1: Although I struggled with the book in the beginning, feeling that I had to be in a particular mood, I did get through it. I felt it somewhat difficult to relate to the main female character. It takes a long time in the book before she actually appears to be anything resembling a " Rebel Wife". I find it unsettling that there is so much build up around this book being the anti-Gone With the Wind. Trust me, they're not even in the same category and Augusta would have been chewed up and spit out by Ms. Scarlett in no time flat. It will be interesting to see if this book will have the longevity on the bookshelves as its predecessor does.
review 2: This book was an impulse buy because it was 50% off and I couldn't pass up the deal. I am so glad I bought it! The R
... moreebel Wife takes place in post-Civil War Alabama. The main character is a well-to-do white woman who was recently widowed, and there is some controversy surrounding her late husband's will. The cast of local women, house servants, and hired hands is wonderfully described. I really enjoy books about this time period, especially concerning relationships between the black and white races. I will admit that some parts left me a bit confused and some of the scenes seemed a bit far-fetched, but I loved the setting, the action, and the characters in this book. less
