review 1: I am a huge fan of the way Ted Heller writes. Something about HOW he constructs a story just resonates with me. I've read all his other books and "Pocket Kings" is no different. Though I liked "West of Babylon" and "Funnymen" better, this book was a great read. It's a little hard to love the main character, though, and I think that is why I didn't flat out love this book. He's the very definition of the concept of an anti-hero (but english lit was a long time ago so don't quote me on that). I found myself waiting for bad stuff to happen to him and then feeling good that something bad happened to him. Then I felt like a jerk and that this was making me a bad person. Most people don't get this involved though so I think you'll like it just fine. It's a funny, surprising read... more. Very well written and enjoyable. If you like it, you should definitely try his other books. If you don't like it, you should still try his other books since this one is kind of an outlier.
review 2: Much like going to a hockey game and seeing a boxing match break out, I picked up this novel about a guy playing online poker only to wind up reading a darkly comic rant about the publishing world. The poker parts were completely absurd and unbelievable. The publishing rants seemed realistic enough to me. Enjoyable enough that, but I'm going to continue to look for a good novel about gambling. They are rarer than a royal flush. less

Fun book for 2/3 of the book. The last 1/3 is just not great like it should have been.

What seemed clever on page 50 turned tedious and overwrought by page 180.

Hated this book. I wish I could give it a negative star
