review 1: A variety of jungle animals are introduced through pencil and watercolor illustrations on two page spreads. Each is doing something (eating, drinking, digging, etc.) which is easily identifiable. Using the picture clues, young readers will easily be able to pick this book up and be success in reading the text of this non-fiction book. At the end of the story is a surprise which makes me think of Michael Hall's book My Heart is Like a Zoo. Themes associated with this title include the following: animals (non-fiction), easy reader, science and nature. This title is recommended for first grade, but can be appropriate for children who are reading at an advanced level. It is leveled at a D based on the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level and focuses on reading standards for... more Literature and Foundational Skills in the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for kindergarten through second grade.
review 2: A boy is wide-eyed as he sits with a book on his lap and studies animals on the savanna. Look! Elephant eats. Look! Giraffes drink. Look! Warthog digs. Look! Gorilla hides. This simple word pattern is repeated and repeated through the pages as the boy (and reader) gazes on nine animals in all. Lewin then returns the focus to the boy himself, shown playing and reading while surrounded by the play animals before falling asleep with his animals nearby on his quilt. Each double-page spread shows the animal(s) in their natural habitat and illustrates some typical animal behavior. Lewin’s pencil-and-watercolor realistic paintings are awash with sunlight and convey a sense of the animal’s personality, as well as action. One can easily imagine the pounding as zebras race by, the spray as hippos splash, the snuffling as the warthog digs. One of Holiday House’s I Like to Read series, this is a perfect easy nonfiction for an emergent reader. The short sentences and repetitive text will help build confidence in a child just starting to read; the paintings will help the child know the animal names. less
