review 1: So this was actually Christmas story #3, I'll go back to #2 in a minute. This one started out a little precariously for me since all I really learned in the first 6 pages of a less than 30 page story was that Ryan was an absolute total incompetent in the kitchen. I mean seriously keep this man out of the kitchen under all circumstances. There was also a strong clue that he loved his boyfriend Jordan, which came from the fact that he was attempting to cook a meal for Jordan even though he knew he was a disaster in the kitchen and that he'd been staying at a hotel for the past week so that Jordan could pretend he isn't gay rather than be honest with his family about who Ryan really is to him.I was almost ready to quit reading but decided that since the story was so short it... more would be a rather silly thing to do. So I kept reading and things definitely got better and the story definitely improved. 'The Roommate' ended up being a short sweet story that left me smiling and even gave me a couple of laughs and a whole new appreciation for laundry rooms.Ok back to story #2 now and then on to pick out my next read. I love Christmas time!
review 2: Jordan, I wanted to smack him. He’s completely closeted from his family but he swears he’s going to tell them. Except they are coming for a visit and he just can’t handle it right now. Poor Ryan, his long-suffering boyfriend, has been forced into staying at a hotel for the week, not his own apartment (not even in the spare room!). He’s hopeful that Jordan has done what he promised and all will be right in the world. He sets up a romantic I’m-home dinner the night Jordan takes them to the airport, which was incredibly funny to read (from the poor slashed potatoes to the limping to make his cut finger feel better, I laughed and sympathized with him.). So how horrible when it turns out Jordan’s family was snowed in and here they are back at the apartment, introduced by Jordan to “the other guy who lives here, my roommate, Ryan”. I wanted to just kill him. He lies to his aunt, he insults Ryan by pretending they mean nothing to each other, he is freaking awful. When Ryan is upset Jordan tells him “don’t be ridiculous” but my god, what is he supposed to be? I loved Ryan and he made the story for me. Jordan’s family is great, funny and understanding (even when their son/brother is being a jerk) and Ryan’s mom is lovely. Sigh. Just didn’t like Jordan. This is sweet and light holiday, with at least one great MC. less
