review 1: Psychocat Reads Review of LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD by Tera Shanley(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)This is another one of the books that made it onto the Psychocat Reads radar during The Sassy Summer Book Party. Grant it, I've always been rather meh about zombies, so while I added it to my TBR list, I didn't exactly rush out to pick it up. Of course, when we decided to focus on the creepier side of things for Halloween week, that seemed like the perfect time to read. When I found out the second book was coming out this month as well, it seemed like even more fun to read them together (more on book 2 tomorrow). So, despite my initial hesitation, let's see what happened when I settled in with LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD.The Charact... moreers: Laney is the type of character I love to read. She's a bad ass, but at the same time she struggles with her own set of insecurities and very human emotions. This well-balanced type of character makes it easier to get absorbed in a book that takes place in a setting that might otherwise be difficult to relate to. The other characters in the book are also well written and for the most part easy to relate to. None of them are perfect, but their flaws are often their most endearing parts. The Relationships: Laney's far from easy decisions in the romance department only cover part of the relationships within LOVE IN THE TIME OF THE DEAD. I loved that Tera built the story around more than just her struggle there. Even as the story is from Laney's POV, you are able to see the importance of the relationships between the other characters that surround her. On top of that, I loved the friendship between Eloise and Laney. Even in the time of the dead, every woman needs a friend.Too Perfect or Perfectly Flawed: Not much about life in the middle of a zombie apocalypse is likely to be classified as too perfect. While these characters are in the middle of extraordinary circumstances, they are also contending with very real, very human struggles. That combination creates a perfectly flawed love story that will keep you guessing for most of the book. Jen's Final Rating: 5 STARS! Great mix of action and intensity interwoven with the very human struggles of heartbreak, love, sacrifice, and betrayal.Psychocat's Final Rating: 5 CLAWS! Psychocat is always a sucker for a bad ass heroine, and Laney was no exception.
review 2: As a huge Walking Dead fan, I was intrigued to see if an author could translate that sort of world into a romance. Tera Shanley delivers and then some! Laney Landry has a tough exterior built up after years of fighting and killing the Dead, but she has a vulnerable side she tries to hide. It is refreshing to read about a woman character who is a fighter, but yet is not tough as nails and a better fighter than everyone around her. Instead, she relies on her team mates: her brother, Jarren and his army buddies Derek Mitchell and Aaron Guiest. Laney holds the possible cure to the zombie apocalypse in her blood. She is immune to Dead bites. The tale begins with the group entering a community of survivors led by the handsome, conflicted Sean Daniels. A love triangle develops between Laney, Sean, and Derek Mitchell and this is the part I loved the most because I found myself rooting for first one, then the other, and back again up until three quarters of the book when I settled on one of them. (And I was ecstatic to find out he's who Laney chose as well!) I've never read a love triangle story where both men were in a dead heat like this. Most of the book reads at a breakneck pace of zombie attacks and romantic crises. I choked up more than once at things that happened thwart Laney. And, wow, the story behind MItchell's tattoo is just brilliant. I finished this book in two days and frantically read through my lunch break today to finish because I couldn't put the damn book down! less
