review 1: Grant's books are lengthy and involved with quite a cast of characters. It is useful to refer to her list of characters at the beginning of the book; she indicates which ones are historical and which are her creation. The intricacy of the plot and the relationships of the characters (including their past relationships) are very complex and remind me some of classic Russian novels. Part of the complexity is the changing "love" relationships of the characters, many of whom seem to change romantic partners as fast as women change their gowns. While this may be historically socially correct, one does wonder what "love" means to the characters. Another complexity is that Grant does not explain the background fully of the two Rannochs, the main characters, but after finishi... moreng the novel I find that this is #3; if I had read #1 and 2 i would have understood more of how their marriage had evolved. Nonetheless Grant gives sufficient hints for me to have some understanding of why they are not more honest with one another, or rather keep secrets from one another. So, lots of intrigue in this book. I gave it 4 stars just because I became fatigued with trying to keep straight who was sleeping with whom now (and in the past) and trying to change partners. Grant is good at plotting, but I suggest starting with book #1.
review 2: Vienna Waltz is a very enjoyable murder mystery set during the Vienna Congress of 1814. It has a fascinating mix of true historical figures, such as the Russian Czar and Prince Metternich, and imaginary characters such as our heroine, Suzanne Rannoch, who has a rather shady past. With lots of descriptions of gorgeous clothes, diplomats dancing at glittering balls, and skulduggery in dark, stinking alleyways, the setting is vivid and believable, and the mystery itself an intriguing puzzle. less
