We have 30 waves to defend 15 fossils. Unlike other levels the fossils aren’t all together in the end of the stage. There’s six at the beginning passed the first two spots, five in the middle passed the middle four spots, and then four at the end after the last six spots. The pokemon in this level are very useful, basically everything is worth catching. For now only paras, and oddish/bellsprout may be useful to you in the next levels. Poliwag is also needed for an upcoming level as well.

If you’re lucky a glitch may occur where even if all the fossils are taken you won’t lose. This may have been fixed, but it’s one I used to run into quite often. I recommend keeping all your pokemon to the top. You are likely to lose the first six fossils no matter what, so it’s best to focus on the remaining ones. If you put pokemon in the last six spots too soon they won’t see enough action and by then it’ll be too late to stop any enemies.

Personally I put Pikachu and Geodude at the top. Both have good coverage against a large amount of the incoming pokemon. Together they take care of all water, flying, and fire. Bulbasaur takes care of the rock and ground from the middle section and Butterfree takes care of the grass. I also brought Rattata and Mankey to take care of stragglers. Having a geodude with magnitude is super useful as it causes damage and debuffs speed. I had some trouble with the golbat and had to alternate Geodude’s moves between magnitude and rock through, but I managed to beat it in one try with pokemon leveled around 13-15.
