review 1: As you drive west on the T-Can, you know how you can see Winnipeg coming from about 30 miles away? Same thing with Fallis' plotlines. Yes, his writing is funny and clever sometimes, but his narrative is predictable, clunky and contrived. I have now read three of his books and in every one of them, there is the "quirky hobby" - (ie the hovercraft in "Best Laid Plans" or the parabolic mic in "No Relation"). From the second it appears on the page, you just know that it will be a major plot point that saves the day. If only life wrapped up as neatly as a Terry Fallis story.

... moretad predictable, but the writing was good so I didn't mind. I am thinking my lack of interest in Canadian politics kept me from fully enjoying this one. It took me longer than usual to read a book of this length. This was for my book club, and while it's nice to not have a depressing read I can't see how much conversation it will generate... less
