review 1: When I was a freshman in high school, a friend gave me Wizard's First Rule to read. It was my first introduction to fantasy and it immediately sucked me in. I eagerly awaited each new edition of the Sword of Truth series. And I still think the first four books of the series are some of the best fantasy I have ever read. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy all of the books in the series and towards the end I was just reading out of obligation.Still, I can't believe that this book was written by the same man. It's truly awful and a poor mockery of that first novel I so enjoyed. In truth, I only read it because of a perverse curiosity to see what happens to the House of Rahl. So, was Alex a descendant of Jen? Why was Jax's surname Amnell? Were we to believe she was a confessor? So... more many questions and yet I can't bring myself to inquire further.
review 2: I liked the change of the present setting in the second created world, and I liked the parallels to the Richard/Khalan Sword of Truth story arc...you could certainly see Richard in Alex and Khalan, with a splash of Nicci, in Jax. RC and his thugs were clearly a remixed Darken Rhal/Jhang. The only thing I disliked was the part or two that started to slide into the preachy philosophical political ideology rants disguised as monologues that we've come to know, expect, and skip past in Goodkind novels. Compared to some of the main story arc novels though, this occurrence was minimal. less

Meh. Endless descriptions bored me, and the ending was disappointingly facile. Wouldn't recommend.

Read this awhile ago. It was a good book, his first outside the Sword of Truth series.
