review 1: When I first cracked opened this book, I really wanted to like it, but I didn't think I would. I also accidentally purchased it from NOOK so I felt like I was going to be stuck with it regardless.Thankfully, I liked it! It took a little while, but it grew on me.Chapters 5-6 felt really drawn out over Magda's thoughts of jumping over the edge in taking her own life. It became a bit boring. I wondered if her husband actually jumped or if he was pushed. It was possible that someone could have sneaked up past the guards of the secret corridor to surprise the wizard then pushed him to his death. In Chapter 7 when Magda finds her husband's note, the text should have been quoted and/or in a different font. It did not have these elements in the NOOK digital version. Having the text... more in the same format was confusing to me for I pictured hearing Magda's husband's voice over the note.I was confused on the location transition from Chapters 40 to 41. The story goes from the maze in finding the murder to within council chambers. I didn't like how Chapter 88 jumped into Chapter 89. You have all this build up and suspense of "The Confessor" from Chapter 88 and really throughout the whole story then it fell flat. She's stabbed, dies and poof is reborn; yet Merritt says it would be more complicated than that.I will share that I was not hooked into the story until the beginning sections with Isadore. They were amazing! I wished the whole story read like that for it was intriguing. As the story progressed, it did begin to have that sort of story-telling narrative. The descriptions Goodkind gives in every element of the story really helped to pull the reader in and give a clear understanding of the location, events, etc. For most of the beginning of the story, events followed along one after the other. But, towards the end, series of days seemed to span between each chapter/event. It does not list how much time has passed so sometimes it was difficult to grasp the time frame.Overall, it felt like a long read but was good at times. I started this novel at the beach and finished it at the beach (a few weeks later)3 out of 5 StarsHappy Reading!Side Note: Goodreads lists 481 under ebook. My nook digital version is 1088 pages long.
review 2: Now that I'm finished, I can say that, all my nitpicking updates aside, I enjoyed the book. I've always wanted to read a book based in this time period, to get to know these characters beyond what is in the writen record. I was a little disappointed that Magda and Merritt didn't really have strong personalities of their own, so they sort of came off as a halfassed Kahlahn and Richard. I swear I was just waiting for Merritt to rake his fingers through his hair. I still look forward to reading more. Next I will be reading The Third Kingdom. less

Great addition to the story line. I love this series, this is one of the first TSOT books that I didn't feel like every chapter had an explanation from previous books and flowed really well. I get tired of reading reviews from people who hate on Goodkind. His characters are well developed and likable. If you can get past the rehashing of history from the other books and get the meat of the story, they all are brilliant.
